The Hermitazh (Hermitage) is the fabulous baroque Winter Palace that was built specifically to house Russia’s incredible collection of arts and antiquities. Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, there are over three million pieces displayed in the Winter Palace galleries. Highlights of the collection include works by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Raphael, and more. Besides the displays, the interior of the museum is a showpiece on its own. The ceilings are gilded; there are marble colonnades, crystal chandeliers, and fabulous mosaic floors. Restaurants include 1913 a casually elegant dining experience that offers traditional Russian cuisine and large portions. Another choice is Bagrationi featuring live music and Georgian food. Everything is prepared fresh, and there are half-portions for lighter eaters.
