Aalst is in East Flanders, in Belgium. This medium-sized town has a population of around 77,000 people. Aalst is situated between the larger city of Ghent (Gent) and the capital, Brussels. Nineteen miles northwest of Brussels, Aalst is comprised of the main city itself, and the villages of Baardegem, Erembodegem, Gijzegem, Herdersem, Hofstade, Meldert, Moorsel, and Nieuwerkerken.
Aalst has a vibrant textile industry. It produces not only the textiles themselves, but manufactures many of the machines needed for this level of manufacture. The more rural regions are noted for their production of hops, which are sold to long-standing breweries in the region. This hop-growing area has nurtured the founding of major breweries. The Werf arts centre offers exhibitions, concerts, dance or theatre performances, which has added to the cultural tourism industry. There are many options throughout the region for shared office space to let.
