Area Information

In New York, 4th Avenue is known as Park Avenue. This 140 foot (43 meter) wide boulevard carries two-way traffic, running north and south through Manhattan. It runs parallel to Madison Avenue to the west and Lexington Avenue to the east, for most of its length. There is a median dividing the traffic lanes that contains flowers and greenery, with Christmas trees in December. Originating at the Bowery, from Cooper Square at 8th Street to Union Square at 14th Street, this road is still known as Fourth Avenue. From 14th Street to 17th Street, 4th Avenue forms the eastern boundary of Union Square, and the rod is known as Union Square East. At this location its southbound lanes merge with Broadway for this distance. Moving on from 17th Street to 32nd Street, the avenue changes names again, and becomes Park Avenue South. Once above 32nd Street, and for the rest of its run, it is known as Park Avenue. From 33rd Street to 40th Street, the left-hand northbound lane moves into the Murray Hill Tunnel. Once it crosses 40th street, the center lanes of Park Avenue rise onto an elevated structure that splits around Grand Central Terminal and the MetLife Building. The traffic is carried around opposite sides of the building. It then crosses over the bridge, one of two structures in Manhattan known as the Park Avenue Viaduct, and returns to ground level at 46th Street after going through the Helmsley Building. Park Avenue comes to an end just north of 132nd Street, and connects to the Harlem River Drive. On the other side of the river, in the Bronx by the street just east of the railroad, the road continues under the name Park Avenue.
