As the main town of the Haarlemmermeer municipality, Hoofddorp is situated in the province of North Holland, in the Netherlands. Founded in 1853, the name of the town translated to English means Main (or Head) Village. The town was formed as soon as the area’s former lake Haarlemmermeer was drained, and the land was reclaimed. The town is located just 20 km (12 miles) from Amsterdam.
The town serves as a bedroom community for those who work at the airport, and for Amsterdam. Hoofddorp features a state-of-the-art training centre and Headquarters for JAA, the Joint Aviation Authorities of Europe. It is a five minute walk from the towns train station. There are many options for serviced offices in the Hoofddorp area.

Hoofddorp offers easy access to many festivals and annual events, including Mystery Land, Concours Hippique, and Meerlive and Hoofddorp Culinair. There is also the Meer Jazz festival, held in the city centre every spring. This small community has a few bars, and several restaurants. Dining options include Bistro De Pimpernel – offering French cuisine, it takes reservations and offers menu specialties that change with the time of year. They also have an extensive wine list. Another options is Restaurant Elders – offering French, Mediterranean, and Dutch cuisines with outdoor seating available.
Hoofddorp is the closest city to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. When travelling by train from Schiphol, it takes 4 minutes and is only one stop. From the town to Amsterdam’s Central Station is 25 minutes by train. The town is served by Hoofddorp railway station. There are many options for getting to Leiden Centraal railway station, Amsterdam Zuid railway station, and the Amsterdam Central station.
