Area Information

Bayreuth is a city in the state of Bavaria Land in east-central Germany. It lies on the Roter (Red) Main River between the Fichtelgebirge (mountainous plateau) and the Franconian Jura Mountains, northeast of Nürnberg. The town offers baroque and rococo architectural treasures, and was home to the famous composer, Richard Wagner. Most people visit Bayreuth for its annual Wagner opera festival, the premier location for Wagnerian performance in the world.

Bayreuth’s economic success is due, in part, to its administrative and service centre for the Franconia region. Tourism is also important, and the city has a diversified manufacturing sector. The University of Bayreuth opened in 1975. The city is also the site of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. There are annual music festivals held in July and August; these festivals are a significant factor in Bayreuth’s economy. Important businesses in the area include Basell Bayreuth Chemie, producer of polyolefins, Brauerei Gebrüder Maisel, wheat beer specialist, British American Tobacco (Germany) GmbH, cigarette production, Cherry, data entry devices, switches and sensors, car motifs, Grundig Business Systems, world market leader Dictaphone systems, and Stäubli, textile machines, technical couplings and robot arms. Entertainment And Dining Out

For an educational outing, Maisel’s Brewery and Cooper’s Museum provides a lesson in the production of Weizen beer. This is the largest brewery in the world and offers an interesting look at a collection of over 5,500 beer glasses and mugs. Within the town centre, the Bayerischer Hof (Hotel) houses the town’s most intriguing dining choices, including restaurants with both French and Franconian cuisine. The Hans-Sachs-Stube is an air-conditioned replica of an old inn. Its walls are covered with pictures of famous opera singers who have performed in Bayreuth or dined at the restaurant. There is also Spanische Stube, the hotel’s bistro. But the best dining can be found at the Gendarmerie, the main à la carte restaurant for the hotel. Here the food combines inventive French dishes with the best of Franconian fare.
